Dissolved Clothing

Mercedes Benz Amsterdam Fashion Week
Jef Montes – Friday 15 January 2016

‘Resolver’ is the name of Jef Montes’ fall/winter 2016 collection.

Blue lighting lit up the whole space before the show started, blue ‘boxes’ laid at the beginning of the catwalk. When the music started, models appeared and took place on these ‘boxes’ while two others threw water towards them. Their clothing was wet and slowly torn into smaller streaks of fabric till no fabric at all during their journey walking down the catwalk. This gave a beautiful effect and an almost complete naked view of the models. Some of the models walked down the catwalk holding a balloon filled with water, as if they were pregnant, and they let it burst halfway. One of the models during the show was actually pregnant and showed her belly with pride.

What they were wearing?

Jef Montes is known for his use of new types of materials for every collection. For this collection he used a material that felt like glue, which dissolved when it mixed with water. The pieces the models were wearing were grey, gleaming and loose around their bodies, like draped pieces of clothing. Everything was one piece and the models were naked underneath.

What is the message?

This collection is a critical response to the fast and on-going fashion world these days. It’s a ‘solution’, literally; the clothing dissolved, for today’s fashion that apparently died. What is fashion nowadays, what is still standing when it comes to the fashion industry?

Personally, I thought this fashion show was about women. Carrying new life insight them, an innocent creature with no idea what the world looks like, no expectations or judgments about it. Carrying a child inside a body is a humongous responsibility and privilege to have as a woman. I thought we were pulled back to the beginning of life, during this show, because the world around us is evolving extremely quickly, technology and fashion as well, are on-going processes.

Without clothes, we’re all the same. We’re equal, especially with no material objects, everybody has a body, a mind and soul, this is here where it all begins, right?!

Spring/Summer ’16 Fashion Show: WHITE AFRICA

The following post is written on July 11th, 2015. I wrote this post for the website Trendpit.nl . This post is about Zyanya Keizer’s fashion show, during the Mercedes Benz Amsterdam Fashion Week July 2015. It was an amazing show.

All white everything in African style. The catwalk was covered with white flour and above the catwalk dangled three airy canvases. Amidst this white ambiance stood just one dark African model. She was covered in a strong structured white dress with her head behind a mask.

PHOTOGRAPHER

In this extraordinary setting the other models were different from the African one. The models were white-skinned and their foreheads were painted in orange. Their hair was braided and coloured white. The collection of Zyanya Keizer consists of light and earthy colours, like white, brown and grey. Notable was the wide variety in shapes and materials. Beads, little balls and strings graced the garments. There was a clear contrast between soft loose-fittings and hard structured pieces. In many of the garments organic forms were visible. Zyanya does often take inspiration from the connection between man and nature and this characteristic was clear to see. This collection was definitely based on influences and the improbability of Mother Nature.

PHOTOGRAPHER      PHOTOGRAPHER

After seeing the white models in an African setting it became clear that Zyanya wanted to pay attention to a social problem. A major social problem in Africa is the aversion that prevails against albinos. According to many Africans an albino goes against nature. Today the white skin models occurred as the African albino. Our nature can be improbable and this improbability was visible today, the albinos were in the majority.

With this collection Zyanya will support the African albinos. Next week there will be an auction where different garments will be acutioned. The money will be given to the Foundation for African Albinos.

Spring/Summer ’16 Fashion Shows: DIVING DEEP

The following post is written on July 9th, 2015. I wrote this post with a fellow student for our website Trendpit.nl . This post is about fashion show of Judith van Vliet x Chris van den Elzen, during the Mercedes Benz Amsterdam Fashion Week July 2015.

On the opening night of Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week, Judith van Vliet and Chris van den Elzen presented their second collaboration called ‘Dark Depths’.

The oceans are the lungs of our planet, which are contaminated by humanity with trash and chemicals. People are not aware that de dark depths of the see have many secrets, and that the dark water holds unknown knowledge. In a darkness where time does not exist, a world full of secrets is hidden. This was the inspiration for the show tonight.

Judith van Vliet x Chris van den Elzen by Trendpit

The show started with some pink lights, like little fishes in the ocean. When the first model appeared, the room was still in darkness. It felt like we were deep down in the ocean. She was wearing a dress, with an armour that was glowing in the dark. In the middle of the catwalk she stopped, the lights turned on and the music started. The music consisted of noises that we associated with the depth of the ocean and submarine sounds. During the show we saw the glowing in the dark in every outfit, combined with the colours black, blue and coral. While some outfits were really light and floating, others where heavy and knitted.

The outfits designed by Judith van Vliet were styled with the shoes of Chris van den Elzen, which seemed to us as a modern day interpretation of the jelly sandals.

The show was a perfect combination of 3D-printing and craftsmanship and a perfect combination of two young talented designers.

We think, in a time where we seem to forget about the oceans and what we are doing to them, we need reminders as these. By making the creatures of the oceans look human, we feel more responsible for this important part of nature. We can not wait to step in to a submarine and find out what is really hidden in the depths of the oceans!

Fashion Show: TROUBLE IN PARADISE

The following post is written on January 26th, 2015. I wrote this post with a fellow student for our website Trendpit.nl . This post is about Dennis Diem’s fashion show, one of my favorite shows, during the Mercedes Benz Amsterdam Fashion Week January 2015.

We all know Adam and Eve, but do you know Lilith? She was the first woman God assigned to Adam. God created Lilith just like Adam from earth. However, when they got intimate, Adam wanted Lilith to lie underneath him, which means, that she would submit to him. She refused, because she was equivalent to Adam. And then there was trouble in Paradise.

Image: Peter Stigter

During Dennis Diem’s fashion show Lilith, the nightly demon, appeared floating on the moon while the models walked down the catwalk. The collection was fully based on the story of Lilith and therefore also with the earth and feminism. The silhouettes remind us of the style of the perfect 1950’s housewife, contrasted with wide-hemmed masculine pants and tuxedo jackets. On the garments we saw the rainbow elytra’s of a beetle which was embroidered in a snake scale pattern. These snake scales refer to Lilith, because she is symbolically rolled up like a snake in our unconscious. The flowers on the suits and dresses were made from pearl shells. These pearl shells refer to Lilith because she decided to flee from Paradise away to the waters of the ocean. Where she still lives today..

Image: Peter Stigter

The women has been “underneath” for thousand years. She is trapped in a role imposed by cultures and religion. This made the male and female fall into a large imbalance. Now in our time the male and female are more in balance. But it is still an issue that emancipation hasn’t finished yet. We are convinced; as long as Lilith stays in the ocean, feminism will remain.

New ways for more green

Hello,

Sustainability is everywhere, but in so many different ways. That’s really good because this means that many people are thinking about ways to improve their sustainable way of life.

What is it?
Urban Farms are evolving in the cities; there is less space to grow your own vegetables so we have to think about creative solutions. People want to grow their own food as well these days because they don’t know what to believe anymore, there isn’t enough transparency about food rules. So let’s go back to basic and do it yourself.

Gardening

Gardening

Why is it cool?
Creative Urban Farms and ‘Pop Up gardens’ are cool because you can take your garden everywhere with you. It’s healthy, transparent (because you grow your veggies your own) and sustainable as well. There are a lot of creative ways to keep your urban garden, on top of the roofs of flats and houses, or on top of a driving buss, on your balcony etc.

Why does it have future growth potential?
Cities will grow and become more modern as they are right now. Which means we have to make some room for green. So a garden on top of a roof is smart. If you’re having a work break you can visit the roof and cut some fresh lettuce for your sandwich for example. A pop up garden will come and go, everybody will be busy in the future so you don’t have the full responsibility of the garden but people can do it together.

Quality of Life
Being busy with a personal or publican garden has a big influence on the quality of life. Gardening together has impact on the social wellbeing of people because Urban Farms and Pop up gardens provides social connection, health and energy security (physical wellbeing), but also satisfaction (emotional wellbeing).

In our future world where sustainability is a must, there will be a lot of apartments like ‘The Ark’ and ‘Pop Up Gardens’ in the cities.

Creating different ways of energy sources

Hello world,

Solar energy, wind energy, a hand-woven bamboo water collector, these are all nature friendly ways to get your energy or catch your water. I think most of us are familiar with solar energy etc. This development has been going on for a while now, but the different signals I found are creative ways to produce this nature friendly energy. Signals with a cool factor. With all these developments we are able to improve our precious earth and keep her healthy.

This coolhunt down here is an example from what I found.

 What is it?
The Living wall is a sustainable sound barrier wall, placed along the side of a highway. But it’s not a regular one, people are able to live inside The Living Wall. This project is from NarrativA architects. The sound barrier protects the surrounding residential areas against noise pollution. But The Living Wall purifies the air polluted by road users and other bad influences.

The Living Wall

The Living Wall

Why it is cool?
I believe this is a really cool initiative because we can start using the boring and ugly sound barriers in a new creative way, which helps us, improve the environment as well. Students or other people are able to live in the sound barrier and you won’t even have noise pollution. Plus, the sound barrier impels the energy for the houses inside.

Why does it have future growth potential?
The Living Wall creates a new place to live in. Another important thing is the fact that it uses solar energy to impel energy and The Living Wall purifies the air in- and outside. These are all environmental friendly ways to improve mother earth. It’s sustainable and clean, just what we need in the future.

Quality of Life
In our future world, people love helping out Mother Nature. This has impact on our physical wellbeing because our health will improve if we better the world’s environment. It has also impact on development and activity. People are thinking more about maintaining their solar peddles for example instead of heating their home with unhealthy gasses.

Create a healthy environment by buying a bike

Hi there,

There are different aspects needed to improve a healthy sustainable environment. The way we transport ourselves is one of those aspects. I found many different bikes that contribute to a better environment. But bikes are not the only way to transport yourself without sending bad emissions into the air. I discover more and more electric cars every day and that’s a good thing. These signals are evolving themselves.

I see a future full of different bikes and other transportation ways that have a good influence on the environment. For example: E-bikes as well as bikes where you can charge your phone while you’re cycling, but also electric cars and electric busses with little gardens on top of the roof. These means of transport have no bad emissions; this will lead to a cleaner air and a healthier earth.

What is it?
The bamboo bikes made and designed by Blackstar are a new sustainable way to move you around and through the city. Blackstar is in co-creation with Ghana. This product is Fair-trade and transparent.

Bamboo bike frame

Bamboo bike frame

Why is it cool?
This bamboo bike is cool because it’s made of bamboo. And bamboo grows back again after they cut the trees. This makes bamboo sustainable. This product is also cool because the locals in Ghana are helping out, which means their life improves.

Why does it have future growth potential?
The bike’s frame is made of bamboo; this is better for the environment than regular bikes. When more and more people start using these bikes, fewer cars will be needed. This improves the air we have to inhale and exhale.

Quality of Life
You not only cycle on a beautiful cool bike made of a sustainable product, you also help the local people in Ghana. Buying a bamboo Blackstar bike has influence on the material wellbeing of people because they bought something new and that makes them happy. It has also a big influence on the social and emotional wellbeing because of buying this bike; people support the locals in Ghana. This will lead to satisfaction.

Cork your home

Hello,

It becomes more popular these days, homemade or restyled furniture. But also organic furniture and furniture or houses made of sustainable materials. But why is this happening these days?

We become more aware of the nature around us, sustainability is a priority these days and very popular in- and outside. Besides all the urban farms, the interior world changed as well. Homemade/restyled furniture and organic furniture are fun to make, you can do it with your neighbor. There are also lots of workshops popping up; “Restyle your old furniture, make it fun”.

Cork wall

Cork wall

What is it?
Cork is a sustainable product. It comes from the bark of trees. Cork is usable for many different furniture and accessories in your interior. But what makes Cork so sustainable? There are different reasons why. I will tell you these reasons in the next paragraph.

Why is it cool?
The cool part about Cork is the part where they cut the bark of the trees. The bark grows back. So we don’t have to cut the trees, we just have to shave them. Which means that we can use the tree several times. This is better for the environment.

Another thing about Cork is the possibility to recycle it and use it over and over again for different things. If you’re getting bored with your chair made of cork, just recycle it and design your own cork table or even a wall made of cork.

Why does it have future growth potential?
So I told you the facts around the sustainable aspects of Cork. Using more Cork as furniture and accessories will help the world to safe trees and keep the environment intact.

Kitchen Cork

Kitchen Cork

Quality of Life
Organic furniture and furniture made of sustainable materials (for example: cork) will give people a great feeling, a feeling of satisfaction. Why? Because they are able to help the environment. This stimulates the emotional wellbeing of people. They feel satisfied because of their cool new interior while they are helping the environment.

I found cool cork inspiration on this website and don’t forget to check out this website for cool designs made of random materials.

SLA

Hi there,

I read an article about SLA recently. Settled in our beautiful capital, Amsterdam. It immediately caught my eye and I was very curious about the concept.

What is it?
SLA is a restaurant in Amsterdam. They serve salades, different kind of fresh juices, soup and healthy snacks. The products are biological and sustainable. The products and ingredients they use for their recipes are region products, the wines and beers for example. Their mission is to use pure and tasty ingredients to make exciting courts.

Choose your SLA!

Choose your SLA!

Why is it cool?
It’s cool because they use pure and biological products. Even the meat and poultry are biological.

Moreover, you can compose your own salade as well. You can eat your yummy salade in the restaurant, or you can take it home with you.

SLA is not only a restaurant, but they give workshops as well.

SLA

SLA

Why does it have future growth potential?
Sla has definitely future growth potential because the society these days wants healthy and organic food. SLA gives you that.

They also have an transparent kitchen, so when they are making your salade, you can watch them make it yourself through the window. The origin of the products are mentioned above the courts. The brewery where the beer comes from for example. The guests know where the products come from, how they’re made and what they eat. Just what we need!

The link to their website and Facebook are linked down below.
I’m planning to visit SLA very soon, I’ll let you know about my thoughts!

HAPIfork happydays

Hello readers,

Eat slowly. Lose weight. Feel great!

What is it?
HAPIfork, an electronic fork that warns you when you’re eating to fast and tells you you’re doing great when you’re eating right. It vibrates when you’re eating to fast. This fork helps you with losing weight. It counts down the time you need for one bite. When you bring food to your mouth from your plate with your fork, it’s called “fork serving”. What you need is the fork, a smartphone or tablet and the last thing you need to start using this is the HAPIfork app.

Why is it cool?
It’s really important to eat clean and healthy, for your body and mind. This fork will help you to eat slow, eating slow is very important. Scientific studies proved that the faster you eat, the more you eat. So you will gain weight faster.

The HAPIfork app saves every meal you eat with the HAPIfork, so you can see what you ate, where you ate, how many calories your meal had and how fast you ate.

Colorful HAPIfork

Colorful HAPIfork

Why does it have future growth potential?
It has future growth potential because everything about this fork is transparent. And transparency is exactly what people want in this society. You can follow everything you eat, like a personal trainer for food.

Like I said before, you know how many times you ate, what you ate and where you ate. So you’ll have full sight in your eating pattern and you’re able to change it and live more healthy. The HAPIfork could be a healthy option for many people who are heavy.

The HAPIfork will also make a change in the quality of life of people. If it really works and people are able to change their eating pattern, lose weight and live healthy because of the transparency of the fork. Their quality of life will change in a positive way. They will be able to do more fun things in life with their family and friends.
