In this blog post I’m going to tell you more about a new phone concept. Some of you may have seen this video on your timeline on Facebook and some of you did not. I would like to explain more about this concept. I thought it’s really interesting. So let’s start at the beginning and tell you more about Phonebloks.
What is it?
Phonebloks is a phone that’s worth keeping. This concept is made and introduced by Dave Hakkens. He is actually from the Netherlands. I hear you thinking, a phone that’s worth keeping? Hell no! After one or two years my phone has reached its limit. Or you just want the newest edition that’s just introduced on the market. True, but that’s exactly the problem. Most of the time, when your phone breaks or doesn’t function the way it should, it’s most of the time because of one part that gives up and kills de phone. And what do we do next? We throw it all away because it’s almost impossible to repair it. Dave says in the video: ‘Electronic devices are not designed to last’. But because of this problem, electronic waste is one of the fastest growing wastes in the world. Yes, our mobile phone is the cause of that. My first thought when I saw this concept was: LEGO blocks!
The whole idea is that you can compose all the items that you think you need, yourself. Build your own phone like LEGO blocks. If something isn’t working properly, for example the battery. Then you can only replace the battery or change it for a larger one. You don’t have to throw away the whole phone but only a part of it. If you’re not pleased anymore with for example your camera because you want a bigger one with more options, that’s possible. You can sell your old one to other people as well, so you don’t need to throw it away while it’s still working.
Why is it cool?
Nobody likes it to pay a lot of money to have their phone repaired. Or to lose all their precious information, photos and memories because their phone doesn’t work the way it should work. So it’s really cool because this is a totally new concept that I have never seen before. Everyone is able to compose his or her own phone! When an item doesn’t work anymore you can just replace the item. Because of this, materials will be saved and it is very durable and better for the environment.
Why did Dave Hakkens make this?
I quote: ‘The market of electronic devices is growing rapidly, but it feels like we are building disposable stuff. Every time we make something new we completely throw away the old one. Imagine all the good displays, bluetooths and speakers we have thrown away. I love the connected world that we live in and it’s time to set up a universal modular platform that companies work on together’.
Here is the video that Dave Hakkens made and posted on his website, Facebook and twitter to promote it.
